The torchlight of limited awareness

We often use a torchlight rather than a floodlight when we look within. We point the light only at the aspects of ourselves that we like and accept, leaving those we feel uneasy about in the darkness.

We illuminate what we like in order to bring it into focus and to the forefront of how we show up. But the irony is that it’s what’s deep behind the curtains that pulls the strings. Our feelings, thoughts and actions are manoeuvred by what we keep in the darkness. It’s not what we’re aware of that can control us, it’s what we’re unaware of.

The parts of us that we don’t illuminate turn our vision into tunnel vision. As we look through this narrow lens, we filter out much more than just these aspects. And we remain blind to the fullness of who we are—to the extent of the potential and power we have.
