Whether we’re clear on them or not, we all have values. They shape how we think and feel about the events of our lives, how we make decisions, what we prioritise, what we ignore.
Research has shown that when we reflect on our values, we are more powerful, strong and healthy, as well as more likely to achieve our goals.
Acting against our values is one of the most damaging things for self-respect. Our values are deeply interwoven with the essence of the person we are. And if we make decisions that are not in alignment with them, we are not being true to ourselves, which harms our self-respect. It is easy, however, to slip into actions that clash with our values, because most people are not aware of their values.
We suffer when we’re not true to ourselves. Taking the time to reflect upon and clarify your values can be a very powerful exercise. It can help you connect with what’s most important to you and align with your authentic self. Being clear on your values will also make it much easier for you to make decisions and set priorities.
