Consciousness vs. contents of consciousness

We are not our thoughts, nor the thinker of thoughts.

Not our experiences, nor the one that’s creating the experiences.

Not our moods, feelings, emotions.

We are neither the narrative, nor the narrator—but the ever-present observer of it all.

We are the container in which everything is happening—the witness of our life experience, the field in which sensations occur. We are the conscious being, not the contents of our consciousness.

Most of us are misidentified with the contents of consciousness. We believe ourselves to be the self that our minds narrate. We equate with our circumstances, thoughts, feelings. We reduce ourselves to our life’s problems.

This creates suffering, because we’re forcing ourselves into a container that can’t contain us. We are trying to fit the expanse, vastness and potentiality that we are into a very small box.
